Diarrhea Treatment
Loose or watery stools are a common symptom of many possible health issues. Most diarrhea is easily managed with over-the-counter medications and resolves within a few days. If you have ongoing diarrhea, especially with other symptoms, it can be a sign of digestive system distress. At Beverly Hills Concierge Doctor, we offer diagnosis and diarrhea treatment at our urgent care center in the greater Los Angeles, CA, area.
Diarrhea is an unpleasant experience, and it may be accompanied by other symptoms. Frequent, watery stools, cramping, abdominal pain, nausea and rectal irritation are all symptoms of diarrhea. If these symptoms continue for more than a few days, you may be at risk of dehydration and other complications.
Causes of Chronic Diarrhea
When you have diarrhea more often than not for several weeks or longer, it can be due to an underlying condition. While temporary diarrhea can be caused by bacterial, fungal, parasite or viral infections or food poisoning, medications and certain foods, lasting symptoms are often signs of a disorder. Causes of chronic diarrhea include:
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Celiac disease
- Crohn’s disease
- Microscopic and ulcerative colitis
Dehydration is the most serious complication from diarrhea, which can cause death. Diarrhea that lasts for more than a few days needs treatment, especially in children. If diarrhea is accompanied by bloody or dark stool, dehydration, fever (over 102 F) or severe pain, it is vital to seek medical care.
Diarrhea Medical Care
Diagnostic testing is used to determine the cause of your diarrhea. Our board certified doctors at Beverly Hills Concierge Doctor will perform the needed blood and stool tests based on your symptoms and medical history. Some patients may need further examinations and imaging tests to determine the cause of chronic or severe diarrhea.
Treatments for diarrhea can include medications to control diarrhea, as well as treatment for any underlying condition. If current medications are causing the loose stools, adjustment of those medications may be needed. For dehydration from diarrhea, we offer IV drips that can replace electrolytes and fluids.
