Sinus Infection Treatment

Sinus Infection Treatment

Sinus congestion and infection are common causes of facial pain. Allergies, colds and other upper respiratory illnesses can affect the sinuses, resulting in sinusitis, which can become a sinus infection. If you have sinus pressure or pain, you may be experiencing a sinus infection. At Beverly Hills Concierge Doctor, we provide sinus infection treatment at our urgent care medical center in the Los Angeles, CA, area.

Sinus infections are most commonly caused by colds, but they can be caused by other nasal conditions. The inflammation in the nasal passages from a cold viral infection can cause the sinuses to become swollen, restricting the drainage of mucus. Sinuses are spaces in the nasal passages located from behind the eyes down and around the nose. When the sinuses are inflamed, it makes it difficult to breathe through your nose, and you may have other symptoms if this becomes a bacterial or viral infection.

Symptoms of Sinus Infections

Sinusitis or sinus infections often accompany seasonal allergies, colds, flu and other respiratory irritants. Some people are at higher risk for sinus infections due to nasal abnormalities, such as nasal polyps or a deviated septum. When the sinuses are inflamed, it can cause uncomfortable symptoms. Acute sinusitis often includes a viral or bacterial infection. Symptoms can include:

  • Thick mucus (yellow or green) draining from the nose
  • Postnasal drip down the throat
  • Congested nose
  • Pain and pressure around the eyes, nose and forehead
  • Headaches and ear pressure
  • Toothaches (especially upper teeth)
  • Fever

Most acute sinusitis symptoms dissipate in about a week, but sinus infections can last longer. Some sinus infections can become severe and require medical treatment. You should see a doctor if you have the following additional symptoms:

  • Symptoms that last more than a week
  • Symptoms improve and then become worse
  • Consistent or high fever
  • Pain, redness or swelling around the eyes
  • Stiff neck
  • Blurred vision

In severe sinus infections, you may need antibiotics or other medications to stop the inflammation. If you have recurrent or chronic sinus infections, you may need more advanced treatment.
