Types of Sexually Transmitted Diseases
STDs are any infections or diseases that can be passed to another person during sexual activity. This includes oral, vaginal and anal sex, and all genders are susceptible to these diseases if they are sexually active. Some STDs begin producing symptoms shortly after infection, while others may have no noticeable symptoms. All pose some level of health risk and require treatment to prevent the spread to others through sex. The most common STDs include:
- Chlamydia
- Gonorrhea
- HIV/AIDS
- Herpes
- HPV
- Syphilis
Many STDs will cause itching, burning, blisters or sores in the genital area. However, HPV and other diseases can silently cause health problems without any symptoms at all.
STD Testing
If you are sexually active and you or your partner are not monogamous, you can be at risk of STDs. Even the use of condoms and other STD preventive devices cannot offer 100% protection. Routine STD testing and screening are recommended for individuals who are sexually active with multiple partners. This can include blood tests, pap smears and other lab testing, depending on which STDs are being screened.
STD Treatment
For those with a positive STD test, we offer treatment at our urgent care facility, as well as through our house call medical service. Most STDs can be treated with oral medications such as antibiotics.
